Umeed has secured 3rd position in Yousif Badri Civic Engagement International Prize 2016 organized by Ahfad University For Women – Sudan

Umeed, the educational awareness and community building society run by the students of Institute of Space Technology (IST), was awarded third prize at the 2016 Yousif Badri Civic Engagement International Competition. Umeed provides continuous material support to about fifty rural area government schools and to students of these schools. Umeed has undertaken various welfare projects in these schools since its inception in year 2010. Umeed has also managed to set up clean drinking water facilities in 15 schools.

The competition was organized by Ahfad University for Women, Sudan and aims at rewarding universities from across the globe for their civic engagement activities. Umeed showcased its welfare work in a competition sponsored by Ahfad University for Women and won Third position in ‘Yousif Badri Civic Engagement International Prize-2016’. This is the first time a university from Pakistan has won a podium place in the competition.

Speaking about Umeed’s recent success, life-long President and Vice Chancellor IST, Imran Rahman said that it is a great honor for the society and its volunteers to gain some much-deserved recognition for the hard work they have done in the last few years.

“It is a great honor to be given so much recognition at such a prestigious platform. It is a great reward for all those who have worked diligently for many years to do their bit for community development. I’m sure that this (award) will open up many opportunities for us as we seek to further our outreach and help as many people and areas as we can,” said Mr. Rahman.

First prize was won by Pretoria University for their work on “Law Clinics” and second prize was won by American University of Beirut for their work on Syrian refugees living in Lebanon. Prize distribution ceremony was held on 12 December 2016 at Ahfad University for Women. The event was attended by notables of Khartoum. Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Pakistan Khartoum, Mr. Ali Ahmad Chaudhary, who was invited by the University to attend the occasion, received the award certificate and cash prize of UD$ 2000 on behalf of Institute of Space Technology Islamabad. Mr. Chaudhary in his message to IST has praised our work and said that it was a great honor for Pakistan as well as IST that its Umeed program had been recognized at international level. He congratulated Institute of Space Technology and team Umeed.

Umeed – a beacon of hope for the underprivileged

Umeed is a unique welfare society which was created by the students of Institute of Space Technology and aims at eliminating poverty in Pakistan through various activities that aim at improving the overall educational infrastructure in government schools in rural areas.
